Bon Bon Delights: Handmade Treats for the Eyes and the Ears

Bon Bon Delights: Handmade Treats for the Eyes and the Ears

Aside from the fact that visiting Bon Bon gives me the chance to see my friend Alessandra Chiodi—one of the chicest, most deeply kind-hearted women in Rome—I also love that truly every item in the store is handmade, or in the case of wallpaper and scarves, at the very least hand-designed before being printed.

Alessandra’s stunning Bon Bon creations are crafted from vintage buttons sourced from around the world, transformed into jewelry that is as whimsical and unique as it is wearable and elegant. Each piece tells a story, each button has a story, and Alessandra goes to great lengths to source them. In fact, when I stopped by to take photos for this story, she just happened to be meeting with one of Europe’s biggest vintage collectors and an international authority on vintage buttons, Simonetta Starrabba.

Formerly known as Roi du Lac, a magnet for Romans in the know, Bon Bon still partners with Roi du Lac—and with SockSi, a Milan-based label known for its footwear and Pier Sicilia, a Sicilian label celebrated for its artisanal bags and swimwear. Under one refined roof you’ll discover everything from Roi du Lac wallpaper and printed silk scarves to Pier Sicilia’s signature footwear and Bon Bon’s whimsical jewelry. Going into the store makes you feel like you are soaking up a living cabinet of curiosities: everything feels curated, timeless and elegant, all part of an experience of slow fashion, design heritage and a celebration of creativity.

Every summer, Bon Bon also sets up a charming boutique right across from Jimmy’s Balcony in Chora, Patmos, Greece —open from early June through the end of August—in collaboration with Roi du Lac and Pier Sicilia. Featuring a select edit of jewelry, printed textiles and Mediterranean-inspired fashion, Bon Bon in Patmos offers a blend of layer of Italian craftsmanship meeting Mediterranean magic.

But don’t worry, Bon Bon re-opens in Rome  on September 1st and if you’re lucky, you’ll also catch a moment with Alessandra herself—whose vision, taste, and kindness infuse every corner of the boutique.
