Alfieri Leather is a recent discovery—and from now on, it will be my go-to destination for any kind of leather good, from wallets and purses to weekend travel bags and custom-made leather jackets. Every piece is crafted from the finest leather and lovingly handmade by artisans in Tuscany, often using jealousy-guarded techniques passed down from one generation to the next.
Alfieri boasts a splendid location at the very beginning of Via del Corso, just where it meets Piazza del Popolo. Originally an art gallery owned by Elvia Alfieri, the mother of the current owner, it became a leather goods shop in 1960 when she transformed the space and enlisted her brothers—master leather craftsmen from Tuscany—to supply the goods. It has been serving generations of Romans ever since.
The craftsmanship of each piece is as superb as the quality of the carefully sourced materials. In an area of Rome abounding with cheap tourist tat, Alfieri is unique: many nearby shops exploit the Made in Italy loophole, qualifying for the label by simply sewing on a button or zipper to low-quality imported goods. Every single item at Alfieri is the opposite—authentic, handmade, and truly Italian, crafted with skill and care by expert artisans in Tuscany. The quality is exceptional, and the prices are almost shockingly affordable.
On a recent visit, I spotted a stunning green leather jacket for women—handmade—for the jaw-dropping discounted price of €174. While I was there, I also witnessed a delivery of custom-ordered leather jackets in rich autumnal hues, commissioned by a visiting Hollywood celebrity.
But you don’t need to be a luminary to shop here—every customer at Alfieri receives royal treatment. All models can be tailored or custom-made, and the price-to-quality ratio earns my unreserved recommendation. It’s a fantastic place to shop for yourself or to find the perfect, meaningful gift.
